The situation inside a Santa Monica, California apartment building looked bleak.
Firefighters were called to the scene when fire broke out inside Crystal Lamirande’s apartment. While they worked to control the blaze, Crystal tearfully told firefighter Andrew Klein that her 10-year-old dog, Nalu, was trapped inside the home.
Firefighters are dedicated to saving lives, and Nalu’s life was no less valuable to him than Crystal’s. He bravely shouldered his pack and headed inside the building, crawling on his hands and knees through the smoky home searching for victims. Eventually he found the dog, but she was eerily still.
Andrew says Nalu was “totally lifeless” when he found her. He carried her outside to fresh air, then began life-saving measures.
For the next 20 minutes, Andrew performed mouth-to-snout resuscitation on Nalu. The dog had no pulse and wasn’t breathing at all. Crystal sat near Andrew, weeping and afraid, as he worked to bring her four-legged companion back to life. Soon other firefighters and bystanders surrounded them, silently hoping for a positive outcome.
After seemingly endless minutes, Nalu woke up!
Andrew comforted the dog as she groggily came back to life. The animal was weak and scared, but otherwise unharmed. Nalu was taken to a veterinarian and placed inside an oxygen tent for about 24 hours. When she was discharged she was back to her normal, perky self. We shudder to think about what would have happened if Andrew hadn’t acted so quickly and utilized his training so perfectly!
Nalu made a complete recovery, all thanks to this incredibly kind and brave firefighter! Andrew clearly places a high value on saving lives. Whether they’re human or animal, it doesn’t matter to the people who love them!
